we knew when she went into heat and planned for her to breed with our other dog, however we didn't think she had actually bred since we kept a close eye on her the whole time and saw nothing. now she is definately pregnant, but we dont know how far along she is. (i guess she bred while we weren't watching).

Take her to your vet, they will be able to tell how far along she is and about when her due date is, all it will take is an ultra sound to determine what stage of pregnancy she's in. Congradulations on the future litter.

Well, if you kept your eye on her the whole time and nothing happened what makes you think she bred? Have you gone to a vet to find out for sure? Could this be a false pregnancy? It takes more than a few minutes for a dog to breed. When did you put her with the male? Start counting from there.

there's no way to really tell how far along she is, especially if the vet said it was too early to ultrasound.. the gestation period of a dog is around 63 days.. some signs to tell that she's close to having her pups is 1.) she doesnt want to eat. 2.) her stomach becomes really tight. although there are many signs those are just a few.. some things you might want to do to help her, is give her a box full of newspapers so she can shred them to make a bed for her puppies, and give her some calcium.. whether its powdered milk (baby's formula) or even cottage cheese. It will help her milk develop so the puppies wont have any calcium defiency. Hope this has helped a little bit.

Bitches in heat should never be left where they can breed with the male alone. It's very easy for her to hurt him. At any rate since you "kept a close eye on them" I wonder if it's a phantom pregnancy? She should be looked at any time now to verify everything is going smoothly so take her in and they will be able to x-ray and see how many (if any) she is carrying. Hope everything goes well. Depending on if this is her first litter and how old she is, schedule an emergency c-section with your vet so he can be ready in case you need him. Best of luck to her.

Why are you breeding your dog? There is a huge pet overpopulation problem, and judging from the fact that you are asking this question on a message board, I suspect you are more of a hobby breeder than anything else.

Bring your pregnant dog to the vet for a check, and neuter your other dog. There's no need for this.

You should definitely talk with your vet. Don't try to figure this out with the help of strangers. The best idea would be your local vet.

you.
