I am considering the difference between a 45 calibre bullet and a 357 magnum. Which one of the two is hotter? Does more damage to a wild boar let's say? Which one would be a better load to carry when one is hunting wild boar to use as a up close and personal weapon?

Which .45 are you referring to? I own a .357 Mag, and two revolvers chambered in .45 Colt. For hunting medium to large game, I would definitely recommend the .45 Colt. For small game, either would do fine. The type of bullet and the load would be of greater concern. For wild boar, a .45 Colt would be perfect. Cast bullets (Kieth or LBT design, 300-350 grs.) at about 1200 fps (Feet Per Second) would do nicely. These types of high-pressure loads are only safe in Ruger, T/C, and Freedom Arms firearms.
The .357 Mag is excellent for personal defense. With a 125 gr. HP, 97% one shot stops are the norm. The .45 Colt would be excellent in this capacity also. I would use a 250 gr. Kieth bullet at about 750-800 fps.
The .45 ACP would be excellent for personal defense also. Defense loads run from 165 grainers at 1250 fps. to 230 gr. bullets at 950 fps. I would not recommend the .45 ACP for hunting anything bigger than small deer, and only then if you are a terrific shot and good stalker.

If I was hunting wild boar, I would rather have a .45 Colt stoked with 325 grain Kieth bullets going about 1000-1100 fps. on my hip than any other combination out there. The Kieth design provides deep, straight penetration, and the relatively slow velocity would provide for quick follow-up shots if necessary.
Happy Hunting.

The .45acp is NOT a hunting pistol. If you mean the .45LC revolver, then it will serve you better hunting than the .45acp or even the .357 Magnum. I've heard of even grizzly bear falling to a .45LC when a cowboy had no other weapon to use against the bear.

If you are going to go boar hunting with a .357 Mag as a backup weapon, then go with a heavy hardcast bullet like the Federal 180 grain hunter. A longer barrel, say a 6" barrel will also serve you better. If you are going boar hunting with your handgun as your primary weapon, then get a .44 Magnum or better. Leave that acp at home.

Good luck.

the 357 will have better velocity and penetrate. it also has a lot of different bullet types avl for hunting and personal protection and for target practice. the 45 acp was made for one thing. man stopper. its slow but has a lot of knockdown power but penetration on a stiff hide is limited. I would say for hogs you want at least a 6" barrel revolver and i would consider a 44 magnum. Ruger Redhawk is an economical choice you could use a 357 on smaller hogs but i would make the shot count or get ready to climb a tree.

.45 ACP? .45 Long Colt? .45-70 Gov't?

There's been a slew of new calibers come out since I was at a bench. I wouldn't use either of those for hunting. Check out Thompson-Center's single-shot...interchangeable barrels in more calibers than you can shake a stick at.

Ah...re-read your question...if you're needing a personal sidearm, go with a good .357 Mag wheelgun, 3"-4" barrel. I like Rugers myself. Federal 125 grain JHP for people, a heavier slug for critters.

you can look at the differences for your self at www.ammoguide.com

Then you can make up your mind. You did not give enough info on which 45 caliber you are comparing the 357 to.

a magnum round has a higher degree of penetration. usually best coming out the muzzle of a barrel atleast six inches long. .45 is a good man stopper-not agood beast stopper. take a look at .44 mag. as well.
