The climate throughout the country is mild, mostly cool temperate to warm temperate, with temperatures rarely falling below 0°C (32°F) or rising above 30°C (86°F). Conditions vary from wet and cold on the West Coast of the South Island to dry and continental in the Mackenzie Basin of inland Canterbury and almost subtropical in Northland. Of the main cities, Christchurch is the driest, receiving only some 640 mm (25 in) of rain per year. Auckland, the wettest, receives almost twice that amount.

New Zealand does not have a large temperature range, lacking the extremes one finds in most continental climates. However, the weather can change unexpectedly — as cold fronts or tropical cyclones quickly blow in. Because of this, you should be prepared for sudden changes in weather and temperature if you’re going hiking or doing other outdoor activities.

Spring lasts from September to November, and New Zealand’s spring weather can range from cold and frosty to warm and hot.

Up the North end of the country a lot better than down South, not the best time for tourism but there will be some good days in there, just don't pack your swimming costume (called togs in NZ) unless you are going to the Hot Pools in the towns that get thermal water.

Fairly grotty. August is the coldest, wettest month. In September it's just starting to warm up. The warmest, driest months are Jan, Feb and Mar. Kids go back to school at end of Jan, so best time to visit is Feb and Mar.
