How long has this been going on? It definately sounds like a medical issue. Take him to a doctor. He could be injured. The longer he is unattended to might make the difference between being able to "mend" him or not.

Sounds like something is causing a sudden shocking pain. A dog that age probably has a pinched nerve from spinal stenosis. Arthritis is an achy feeling.

It could well be arthritis. Or he could have a cancer there that is hurting him: Some years ago we had an ancient terrier-mix dog who showed similar behaviors shortly before she died.

You may want to take your dog for a check-up. Good luck.

Could have a broken bone. Take the dog to the vet and stop his suffering. The vet will fix him up.

Could be a pinched nerve, or other reasons, you need to take him to a vet.
