I thought it took forever on broadband. Dial up?! Oh my God. LOL But as I understand, it's extremely important! First for security reasons. If you don't have it, your computer is not well protected against virus problems and trojans and all those bad things you don't want. It fixes a zillion holes in the Windows system. Plus, I think it has a bunch of stuff added to speed up looking around on the net as well as making more things possible somehow. I'm no technical expert but the impression I get is it is a definite must to have SP2!!!!
Download it sometime when you don't need to use your computer for anything else. And if I were you, I'd do it as soon as possible.

As Windows is updated often, some programs DO run better with SP2. What are the specs on your computer? Dial-Up? That sure will take forever AND a day. You could try installing it when you know you won't need the computer. Like say, late at night. Good luck with deciding what to do.

can you not take your computer to someone that has a broadband connection so you can download the data a bit quicker?
and olice is perfectly correct SP2 fixes a lot of security holes that were left open in the first release of XP. since SP2 there have been numerous other updates. if you are on dial up, i strongly suggest you email microsoft for help and ask if they can send you a CD or DVD with all updates released from and including SP2 to the present day.
Remebr though on dial up your download speed can be increased by simply leaving your computer to get on with the download and not using the internet connection for anything else and not using your computer for anything else for the duration

One word Security. I suggest you get it. I understand with dial up it is going to take a very long time. If you have a friend with broadband have them download it to a cd for you.
