You do not have to travel to New York. I had a similar situation when i needed a copy of my Vermont birth certificate and I live in New Jersey.
New York state will have an office of vital statistics somewhere, probably in Albany. Look them up and find out the rquirements for obtaining a copy. There will be a small fee, maybe $5 or $10 for a certified copy, and you will have to provide some satisfactory forms of identification. This can all be done through the mail and might take a week or so from the time they receive your information and payment.

Well, if New York is anything like California.. Alls you have to do hun, is look on yahoo's yellow pages, the town in which you were born, or the county of.... And look up, Vital Statistics of Long Beach New York, or whatever town you were born in... and try to find the address, write it down on a peice of paper, or print it out on your printer, and VWalaaaa!!!!! Feel better now... Oh, and just send them a letter requesting a form, first, or call them if their's a phone number, for them requesting a form... Then, there will be a fee, just send a money order made out exactly the way they tell you to make it out too, okay.. And you should be all set from that point on, it should only take 4-6 weeks to receive it, once they receive your money order..... Good-Luck, to you.. Oh, and You & Yours Have a Wonderful , Peaceful Happy New Year, for me!! Smile!!!

The States Dept of Vital Statistics, or the County Court house where you were born and sometimes any county can obtain records within that State.

If you have family who live in New York they might be able to get it for you.
Otherwise make a phone call to find out if you can order one somehow without actually going there - It might or might not work.
