The popular answer is with Bass. Good beer, good choice. I make it with Smithwicks. Better beer, better choice, better tips.

Fill pint glass with half Smithwicks (or your choice of Tan beer.Use Budweiser, I don't care) If using a tap, Guinness has a built in feature that allows you to push forward on the handle pouring very slowly. If not using a tap, the ever so popular spoon method works very well. Slowly pour the Guinness over the spoon into the glass. The whole concept of is layering. If you screw it up, and you know you will be serving this drink or your having it at home and are patient, make it and let it cool in the fridge for an hour. The specific gravity of the two beers will equalize themselves and the layering effect will happen on it's own.

Cheers,

A black and tan is usually made with Bass ale (tan) and Guiness (black) You fill half (or slightly more than) the glass with Bass, then slowly pour Guiness over the back of a spoon and it should rest on top of the Bass giving you a black and tan. Lately I've been having black and tans with Saranac Pumpkin Ale instead of Bass Ale, it's a nice change for the season, and quite good too. Enjoy!!

Black & Tan

1 part Bass® pale ale
1 part Guinness® stout

Fill stien half full with Bass. Next pour Guiness over a spoon slowly until glass is full. If done correctly the Guiness will stay on top and the Bass on bottom hence the name Black & Tan.

mixing a stout (black) beer with a pale (tan) beer. The most popular that I know of is Guiness and Harp. Guiness makes Harp, and I know that's who Guiness recommends.

It's a bit tricky since you want to pour the Guiness so that it's on the bottom then the Bass so that it floats on top of that.
