I have a 5 month old Japanese Chin. He is already paper trained and so far no accidents. He loves to stay home. But when i wanna walk him, he refuses to go out. He starts to shake. I usually end up carrying him a couple of blocks. Then when i put him down, he runs home waiting for me to open the door to go back in. Then he does his business at home on the paper. So can a dog stay home without being let outside?..since hes already paper trained.

That paper training will get old as he gets older and starts hiking his leg up on your furniture. If you don't have a fenced in yard to let him out and have to walk him, try just staying around your home until he gets over being nervous then go further away from the house. Keep him on a leash so he can't run back home.

You might want to try taking some newspaper outside with you. Then, he will feel the familiar newspaper and come to understand it's okay to potty outside, too!

It won't harm him if you keep him inside, but it could inhibit you and your relationship with him in the long run. You need to work with him while he's young in hopes that he will come to accept the outdoors.

One thing you may want to consider: Is it cold where you live right now?

If so, maybe it's not the outdoors that have him shaking, but he may be cold!

If you can't get him to go out this winter, try putting a sweater on him or trying again in the spring.

If none of this works, you may want to contact the breeder you got him from. I would ask if he were ever introduced to the outside when he was young. I have been around some dogs that are terrified of grass and the outdoors in general because they never experienced them when puppies. If this is the case with your dog, then you'll just have to be consistent and work with him over time.

Good luck!

Sure, they even make "litter boxes" for dogs. On the other hand, I think that you have a bigger issue to work with. His fear of being outside could be transfered to nervouse energy in the house, and you may end up with a tiny terror in the end. I would suggest that you work on getting him outside more. What do you do when your dog shows that he is afraid? Do you pick him up? Try to sooth him and tell him it will be okay? If you do, while you are only doing what you think is best and what comes naturally, it is not the best thing for this dog. I do not mean to come across harshly, but when your dog is showing abnormal fear, you should ignore the behavior completly. If you pick him up and coddle him when he is afraid, it is basicly telling him that YES, there is a reason to be afraid. And you are reinforcing the negative behavior. I have a fearful dog myself. When she is shaking and trying to hide, that behavior is ignored. When she starts barking or growling, that behavior is corrected immediately with a firm SHHH! You do not allow aggressive behaviors, you ignore fearful behaviors, and you start small. If your dog gets nervous when you get the leash out, then spend a few days just getting the leash out and putting it on him. Then build up to opening the door and walking in and out and then your done. Build up to going down the driveway, then down the block. Build up SLOWLY. When I say ignore the fear, I do not mean, terrify the dog until he can't see straight, I just mean do not reinforce the behavior. Don't push him too far, but work on it a little bit each day.

You said you go a block and then your dog runs home, I'm taking that to mean that your dog isn't leashed. For his own safety, PLEASE ALWAYS LEASH YOUR DOG!!!

Good luck!

It would be better to go outside for health & sanitation reasons, even if well trained on paper/pads. Sounds like your pup is just skittish & scares easily, wanting the security of home. Take him out ON A LEASH at least once per day. He will get used to the outside & be better socialized if you do.
To summarize: It is possible for your dog to lead a long life never leaving your house, but it will be poorly socialized and you be be on "clean up duty" for many years. He will probably outgrow this fear stage, especially if you make "outside time" rewarding by playing, praising, and giving treats when he does his thing outside.

Part of being a responsible dog owner is training your dog, not letting your dog train you. It's healthy for dogs to be outside getting fresh air and exercise. Keep taking him out regularly and spending some time with him outdoors. He'll soon realize he's a dog, not a person.

. No, even if he doesn't want to, you still need to take him outside sometimes, just by putting him a leash so that you could have him control and familiar with the people outside. Maybe that was his first time you took him, sooner he will not like that anymore, just like my dog he were the same on yours when he was 5 months old also?....but the more time you give him and appreeciate him the more he likes to go outside, you need to show him that you are his boss always.

Well dogs definatly need their excercise but I am sure you are thinking to your self , " Well I don't want to torture him" but don't ever think that. What I would do is take him to a trainer and to animals a trainer is like a guidance conselour , someone that they can turn too for help. It might be a bit expesive but it is worth it.

this sounds like a good show for the dog whisperer,, I would leash train him in the back yard,, never letting the dog lead you ,, this puts him in charge,,,

always should be behind you,, you are the alpha dog,, act like it,

( dogs run in packs, alpha dog is the leader, most alpha dogs hump all the other dogs male or female, they show who is boss, most big dogs need to be " humped " by the owner to show them who is boss,)

Hey, dude! LEASH your dog! It's okay if he's toilet trained indoors, but bring him out for runs and wees, as its healthy for them to take in some fresh air.
