One of my online friends asked my advice on divorcing her husband. She divorced him and then met someone online. She lived in Texas he lived in Florida. She moved to Florida and they married and are very happy 5 yrs later. So sure it could work depending on the locations and is one willing to move. Of course meeting for real and going out will be a factor to know if for sure you are compatible with each other.

If you are both only separated...stop the relationship. You both need time to find out who you are as individuals, what you want including if you want to work on your marriage. I know that sounds like a typical answer, but it is true. You need to know who you are and work on your existing life with your existing partner first. If you both get divorced, still wait at least a-2 years before you get into a relationship. Work on your self. It is hard, but trust from someone who knows.

As with anything you do online, make sure you KNOW who this person is. I don't know if you've met in person or are even close enough to do so, but often times the persona that you are reflecting to others is somewhat distorted online. Whether on purpose or by your natural desires to hide those "ugly" parts of your "baggage", you really won't know someone until you've been able to spend time with them in person.
Be careful with your online romances and friendships. Time and circumstances work differently when you're only contact with someone is online.

No. No. No. I tried that and she cheated on me after 3 years. It won't work. Spare yourself the agony.

well you can't always trust everybody on-line, and well theres nothing wrong with online dating, you just need to have your boundaries, so maybe it might work out, you never know.
