The Bible was originally written mainly in Hebrew and Greek. When writing about the soul, the Bible writers used the Hebrew word ne′phesh or the Greek word psy·khe′.When you examine the way “soul” or “souls” is used in the Bible, it becomes evident that this word basically refers to (1) people, (2) animals, or (3) the life that a person or an animal enjoys.

Genesis 2:7 says "...and the man came to be a living soul. " This suggests that man himself is soul, otherwise it would have been, Man was given a soul or man became to have a living soul....

Bible writers used the Hebrew word ru′ach or the Greek word pneu′ma when writing about the “spirit.” The Scriptures themselves indicate the meaning of those words. For instance, Psalm 104:29 states: “If you [Jehovah] take away their spirit [ru′ach], they expire, and back to their dust they go.” And James 2:26 notes that “the body without spirit [pneu′ma] is dead.” In these verses, then, “spirit” refers to that which gives life to a body. Without spirit, the body is dead. Therefore, in the Bible the word ru′ach is translated not only as “spirit” but also as “force,” or life-force. For example, concerning the Flood in Noah’s day, God said: “I am bringing the deluge of waters upon the earth to bring to ruin all flesh in which the force [ru′ach] of life is active from under the heavens.” (Genesis 6:17; 7:15, 22) “Spirit” thus refers to an invisible force (the spark of life) that animates all living creatures.

The soul and the spirit are not the same. The body needs the spirit in much the same way as a radio needs electricity—in order to function. To illustrate this further, think of a portable radio. When you put batteries in a portable radio and turn it on, the electricity stored in the batteries brings the radio to life, so to speak. Without batteries, however, the radio is dead. So is another kind of radio when it is unplugged from an electric outlet. Similarly, the spirit is the force that brings our body to life. Also, like electricity, the spirit has no feeling and cannot think. It is an impersonal force. But without that spirit, or life-force, our bodies “expire, and back to their dust they go,” as the psalmist stated.

The Bible makes a clear distinction between soul and spirit. You see them first appear in Genesis chapter two. God forms Adam's body out of the dust, breaths into it a spirit, and the results is a living soul. (See Genesis 2:7)

What you have is a being with two different natures. One is designed to live in the physical world, the other in the spiritual world. One has contact with the natural and is bound by natural laws. The other has contact with the spiritual and is bound by spiritual laws.

In between the two is the soul. That is where the will, emotions and intellect dwell. It receives information from the physical through the body and the spiritual through the spirit. It is there that they are understood and acted upon. The soul is where the decisions are made.

When the soul joins with the body to fulfill what wants and needs of the body, the Bible calls that the flesh. When the soul joins with the spirit to fulfill the needs and wants of the spirit, the Bible calls that the heart. Two different natures designed to work in different realms.

Paul mentions them in 1Thessalonians 5:23 among other places. "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ".

Hebrews 4:12 is another key verse that talks about the two different natures. "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

It shows how with the Word of God, you can see what thinks in your life are coming from the soul (your own intellect) and what things from your spirit (which hears from God). You can separate what things are coming from just the need of your body, and what come from the fallen flesh (the joints and marrow). It also helps you discern what are your thoughts (with all the influences of society, circumstances, education, etc) and what are the intends of your own heart.

So while we often using the words soul and spirit as if they are time same, there is a difference between them. The Bible promises that is you read, study and act on it, it will help you to see and understand the difference between them.

The soul is the the spiritual part of a human being that is believed to continue to exist after the body dies. A spirit is a vital force that characterizes a living being as being alive.

Yes you are right it's same
soul or spirit is actually an given authority and a power of attorney bestowed to some identity by almighty Allah, to take action.
This authority to take action is given to all living elements but human being have one step ahead of animals by having a responsible authority.
So Allah almighty shall ask us what, how we have taken our action by using his given authority.
Soul has power to hold the active factor of present time with us, in that it is only possible to take any action. We keep it from our birth to death.
Death means the soul is taken away and some one is not capable of staying in the present. So it becomes the part of past.
