If you don't wash up often not much point in getting a dish washer- if you don't lift your dishes to the sink you're hardly likely to actually open a door, pull out a rack, put the dishes in, close the door or occasionally put a tablet in and turn the thing on! And leaving dishes in a dishwasher for days on end in the warm damp is probably going to generate more bacteria that leaving them on the kitchen counter (?) Do you have a friend who's ultra (or even semi) clean who you could pay to do it every couple of days or stack up the favours with them?

Unfortunately, there's no alternative to "washing up." It'll have to be done! If the job seems overwhelming, however, tackle it a little at the time. Wash all the glasses, let the silverware soak while you take a short break, etc. Then wash the silver, place on a clean towel to dry, and start on the dishes.

Pre-rinsing and changing the dishwater when it gets yukky will insure clean dinnerware, utensils, and pots and pans.

After all the dishes are clean and put away, wipe down the counters and appliances with a spray cleaner or clean with soapy water and a little bleach. Last, sweep the floor and mop it. Sounds like a lot of work, and it is. But when you let an area go until it looks like a bomb hit, then you've got a bit of work ahead of you!

I may sound like your Mother, but, if you clean as you go and not let it get all piled up, you can maintain a neat, tidy germ-free kitchen. Keep a bottle of spray cleaner nearby, or a spray bottle filled with water and a tiny bit of bleach. Spritz down surfaces and wipe frequently. Those cannisters of Clorox wipes work well, too.

If you can't get to your dishes right away, give them a quick swipe with a long-handled brush or sponge, rinse, and stack until you can give them a proper washing.

Cheap labor - children for rinsing dishes and throwing in the dishwasher. Two things I learned about cleaning a kitchen.

1) Stove cleanup can be a snap.
Supplies:
- Easy off or other oven cleaner (I prefer fume free)
- Roll paper towels
- Gloves
- Garbage can close by
Spray oven down with oven cleaner. Next, remove all pans under the eyes of the range and spray. Put on old cookie sheet and put them inside the oven. Leave them for a couple of hours. When you return simply rinse the pans and wipe the residue off the inside of the oven with paper towels. It's quick, it's fast and your done. I am an environmentally conscious person but I also love speed - this is one area where I splurge.

2) Do you have a mini-shop wet vac? I swear this is the bomb. Once everything is clear from your countertops, put away and in it's place take a shop vac to your countertops, into the fronts of the cabinets, lift up your range top and ope the microwave - I mean there are no worries if you come across something wet / sticky and you can move really fast with a mini shop vac in your hand. Invest in one. You can even get candy cane out of dogs fur with it.

We have a system that works quite well with or without a dishwasher.

First wash all glassware, then dishes (this for us is one dishwasher load.)

second, casseroles and all dishes that didn't fit in the first time.

third load is pots and pans and kitchen tools.

By 9 last night the kitchen was back in order 95%.

It takes a system. Happy New Year.

an alternative to washing up the kitchen???

well.. several actually : instead you have germs.. viral and bacterial, risk of sickness and infections for you and yours; decaying food matter causing horrific smells that even move thru the whole house as well as outdoors; loss of friends coming over for any reason whatsoever; neighbour complaints and board of health notices; slob reputation and wasted muscles and even gain of excess fat from not lifting a finger!
is that enough alternatives?? I know ,, you only asked for one.
