I was looking at the Renoir masterpiece The Luncheon of the Boating Party in this website: http://www.overstockart.com/luatbopa.html and I was wondering what is the event that's taking place?

This is no particular party but just summer outing . They are certainly not aristocrats : if you look carefully one of the men is wearing what the french call a 'marcel' a vest which obviously no aristocrat would wear .
Renoir is capturing here a party of workers out for a holiday spree. It was all quite new the idea of the worker having outings and fun rather like the british working class going to the seaside resorts¨.
Renoir painted these pictures using a model ( how the hell could us contempory painters afford models ...we have to use photos )
In his paintings of the dancing couple he uses the same models ..one is of a country couple and the other is of a bourgeois couple . He did a lot of portraits of the new burgening merchant class. He is one of my heros , not for his sometimes rather chocolate box images but for his bravery in his composition.
And look at this picture how we know the shirt is white but its not in the picture golden with the sun and how the edge is lost in the background grass

I studied this piece in art history and I dont remember ever hearing/reading that there was an event tied to this scene..the Impressionists were all about "catching the moment"..a glimpse of everyday life....my guess is that its a warm afternoon and you have just turned and entered this scene...a group of people enjoying their free afternoon and each others company..the good food, the beautiful setting, the moment really doesnt get much better does it?

Just an outing. Renoir payed models to pose for his paintings, so in actuality it probably was just staged. I am happy that you are studying art for personal enrichment.

I do believe that the subjects are simply a bunch of young aristocrats having a drunken party on a boat.
