Depends on which registry you are asking about. There are many more breeds registered in Europe than America. A good website to see breeds from all over the world is www.furrycritter.com

p.s. and anything that says 'apoo', 'adoodle' is NOT a breed or a hybrid, it is a mix/mutt (no matter how much their gullible owners want to believe) FYI.

There are hundreds of dog breeds, I'm personally happy with my Golden Retrievers.
Breeds are groupen in 7 classes plus a Misc.class, they are:
1. Sporting class (spaniels, retrievers, etc)
2. Hounds (Afghan, greyhounds, etc)
3. Working class (Malammoute, mastiffs, etc - N.B. "husky" is the Esquimau name for "dog", so Husky is not a breed)
4. Terriers
5. Toys (pinschers, griffons, etc)
6. Non-sporting (Chow Chow, Tibetan spaniel, Tibetan terrier, etc)
7. Herding (sheepdogs / cattledogs -Belgian, German etc)
Misc Class : beauceron, Swedish Vallhund for ex.

Below is a reference to the official AKC list, I let you count for yourself !

By going to www.akc.org. This place will tell you anything you need to know, all you have to do is take time out to study it. AKC website is a Breeders Bible.
