Well, the water will break in one of two ways:

1. All at once, which will feel like a big "whoosh" and a ton of water comes out--you will definitely know here.
2. It will leak slowly. Sometimes this is hard to tell. One thing that helps you to know if it is water breaking or not is the smell. If you are healthy, it smells like an ocean. If you have blood mixed in, it may smell musky like a period along with the ocean smell.

You may lose your mucus plug right before, which looks exactly like that-mucus. After that you will see clear fluid leaking.

One note: the fluid may look brown or green as well. In that case, it may be that the baby is a little stressed from the contractions and had a bowel movement inside.

In any case, if your water is broken then you need medical attention after that.
