Should I stay with Sheriff's Department working Detentions which I hate, but have ample opportunities to transfer to other divisions in a few years, or transfer to small ski resort police department where I can work patrol which I love, but have very limited opportunities within the department?

That's one you'll have to decide. However, a few things you might want to consider. How old are you and how long until chances at patrol start opening up? In other words, if you don't make it with the S.O. will you still have time to try to move on to another department?

What are your career goals? Do you want the fast pace of a larger department or are you more interested in the slower paced life of a resort cop? They get their own hair raising incidents but they are fewer and farther between.

If you want a faster paced career with more opportunities such as detective, SWAT, K-9, etc., are you willing to relocate? The more departments you try the more the odds are in your favor.

Finally, realize that just because the opportunity to apply to other divisions w/in the S.O. will occur that doesn't mean you're going to get them. You're going to have to compete against everyone else that wants those positions too.

Stay in the Sheriff's Department because there are more opportunities unlike in patrol where you love the work but there are no chances for improvement.
