If the racing thoughts are due to a manic episode then either drug should bring it under control. If it's a severe episode then Haldol may be needed. It usually brings it under control faster. Lithium is effective but may take longer to work.

Lithium

Lithium is what my Dr. wanted me to take, he said it works very well for racing thoughts and that it is one of the best drugs to treat it. (I refuse all long term drugs for racing thoughts, P.T.S.D. and bipolar). I found what works the best for my racing thoughts is to write the thoughts down on paper! I found when I do this there is no reason to keep going over the thoughts repeating them and my thoughts begin to slow down and go back to normal, if they are down on paper there is no need for them to still be in my head. It might be 3 to 5 hours later or 6 to 12 pages later but it helps and I am then able to sleep and feel that my mind is at peace, if you don't like this idea try keeping a journal or a mood log and write down your feelings as they come up. Try it, it might work for you as well if not then probably a med. will be needed. Good luck!

Whoa....those are major drugs and for "racing thoughts" I think you don't need either...I take xanax...it can be addictive but is better than taking such major mind altering drugs...it takes the "edge" off and helps a lot...good luck.

These drugs may work on short term but in the long run, it might worsen it.
