If you have a setup like mine, this is how it goes: I have cable tv with no box running straight into my tv. My surround comes from my vcr! If you just have cable that is not connected to a digital box, them run it through your vcr,(if you have one), then from there to the tv. If you have the av receiver, the red and white av cords go from the back of the receiver to the av plugs on the back(or front) of the vcr. Now your cable channels come through and are changed through the vcr. some stations are not available in 5.1 surround, but 3 stereo gives it a good live sound as well. For best result depending on your receiver, if you have a vcr input on the back of it, make sure the vcr itself connection is output, in other words, input matches output, and in reverse, always. Good luck!

On the back of your cable box look for the
Red/White/Yellow plug-ins labeled "Audio/Visual Out (or output)
these colors are universal in the A / V industry
Yellow is for video you won't need this one
Red and White is for audio
here is were you'll need RCA cables (they have the Red and white plugs on both ends and sometimes the yellow also)
plug the red into the red and the white into the white
Now on the back of your 5.1 system you should have several RCA inputs labeled tape / aux / yada yada yada
pick one that is not in use and plug in red to red white to white
now you'll need to set the source to which ever input you picked
so if you plugged into Video 2 for example then you'll need to switch to that source on the front in order to here your show

you can hook your dvd player in the same fashion except leave the yellow(video) plug plugged into your TV

OK.....If you have either Coax Digital, or Optical, or even AUDIO OUT jacks on your TV.....You need to connect that to your amplifier's DVD or Video INPUT connections.....

Then you MUST set your Amplifier to only....
Not Phantom, not Stereo, not Cinema or any other FAKE mode.
True

The amp will recognize when the TV show has the Pro-Logic signal, or the Stereo-Only signal and automatically turn on the proper speakers for the proper signal.....

If the show isn't Pro-Logic....you'll only get the FRONT speakers activating....

if your cable box has the digital audio out you can use a regular rca cable to connect to your receiver....if you box does not have this you will have to upgrade to a better digital cable box....same thing with a dvd player if you are not connecting using this method you are not getting true 5.1 sound
