It's actually derived from the word "Luncheon" which means a meal between more significant meals... i.e. breakfast and dinner.

Why is the word for lunch in Germany called "Mitagessen" well it's mid day food, as for lunch some crazy person probably made that noise when he ate "Lunch lunch,munch, munch" ?

THE WORD LUNCH WAS DISCOVERED FROM THE ROMAN PEPOPLES AT 1345. WHEN THEY HAD THIER AFTERNOON MEAL THEY SAY MUNCH OFTEN.THIS MADE THEM GET THE WORD LUNCH.
