My wife booked a Holiday as a xmas present for me and I would like to spend a few days out of the city she has booked a car and I enjoy driving. Have been to L.A.and done most of California several times but never to the East Coast. Is it the right time to see the fall and is the countryside within reasonable driving distance?

If you've never been to the East coast (and insist on driving), drive to Boston. You get the benefit of both a chance to see the foliage and can visit another great east coast city. The best route would either be NE through CT or along the 'gold coast' of CT and Rhode Island. Maybe even visit the Breakers mansion in RI? the trip to Boston direct is 5 hours. You should also consider a day trip to Philadelphia. Its only 2 hours from NYC. And Washington DC is also only about 5 hours away.
have fun!

The Adirondack Mountains when the leaves are changing, has got to be one of the most beautiful sights in the world. I especially like Lake George and Blue Mountain Lake (great museum there). New England in the fall is gorgeous. BUT, it is very difficult to gage the exact moment that the foliage will look the best - if you get there too early, everything is still green and if you get there two days too late, the leaves are gone and the trees are bald. Sometimes, the weather stays warm through October and September is still green. There are sites on line that follow the foliage.

Last week someone asked what to do in New York City in autumn when you're on a budget. My answer:

New York weather is beautiful. You can take the Staten Island Ferry (it's free) and ride past the Statue of Liberty. Eat at some of the best restaurants in the world. See shows - if the cost of a big glitzy Broadway musical is prohibitive, our Off-Broadway theater is great. Museums not to be missed: The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the greatest art museums in the world and the Museum of Modern Art if one of the finest for modern art.. If the idea appeals to you, send away NOW for tickets to tv tapings - try to send to a few that are taped in New York so you are sure to get into at least one (they're free). If you are a baseball fan, be sure to see a game at either a Mets or Yankee game. Go to one of the Chinatowns (lower Manhattan or Flushing Queens) have a fabulous inexpensive meal and go bargain shopping. Be sure to see Central Park - gorgeous in the fall. If you like to walk and/or shop, be sure to see Fifth Avenue, the East Village, Chinatown. If you'd like to see a beautiful view, take the subway to Brooklyn - first stop, walk around that area - Dumbo - it's interesting, THEN, at Sunset, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge back into Manhattan - breathtaking! There are a lot of organized walking tours - food tours, literary tours, historical tours, church tours.

You can never tell these days but NY should be mild and you should see signs of the fall. You could either follow the Hudson up to the Adirondacks and across to the Berkshires, drive across Long Island to the Hamptons or travel across Connecticut, Rhode Island and into Massachusetts and along Cape Cod to Province Town. (They say PTown is a gay resort but it's not in your face).
