India has many languages. It causes less offence if everyone has to speak a foreign language (English), than it would if minorities had to speak the language of the majority group, for example if Punjabis had to speak Hindi.
Also, by learning English, people learn a useful skill for their work, such as in software development, and get access to a lot of useful technical info in English on the net.
Sometimes scientific research is published just in English and isn't always translated into every other language.
English is the internationals language of business, airlines and shipping.
Lots of people around the world speak English as a second language, so it makes travel in such places much easier. For example, in Scandanavia, Germany, The Netherlands, some African countries, the Middle East, etc.

English is the international business language. If an Indian was to speak to a Indonesian, African, American, and/or Chinese person, it would most likely be in English.
Because of this standard, Indians are more successful in business than any other foreign ethnicity in America.
