I'm sorry, if I hear a male call his friends darling, the friend must be a girl, unless he is gay. When I hear a male call another male darling, that's the first thing I think of.

Certain words instantly say "straight male" - addressing friends (male or female) as 'darling' isn't one of those words.
So yes you can call friends darling, and yes they will assume you are gay.

You 'can', it's completely up to you. Just don't be surprised if they decide to ridicule you mercilessly or knock you out for it. The term "darling" is culturally a feminine term, and will be taken as such, no matter how YOU mean it.
