STOPPING communism?? Maybe. But it seem too me that it was more then likely due to the same reasons we went to Iraq. For private interest.
Just think, how pushed for war during those days as well as today, and then how made killing profits.
I bet it wasn't the military, but the defense contractors.

the french were fighting communists who were trying to liberate their country from the oppressors. the french gave up and the Americans took over claiming the domino theory which was if Vietnam falls more countries would fall to communism. plus war is very profitable (Johnson's wife owned businesses who supplied the military with heavy equipment)

In 1945 ww2 ended and france was our ally and the got their butt handed to them in (i know this is spelled wrong) Dein ben pho (sorry) and Ho chi mein asked everyone to leave and for $350,000 in MEDICAL aid ( I am a super right winger but man that seems PRETTY reasonable to me) NOTHING ELSE -it is in the UN minutes and a letter to TRUMAN -well give 'em hel1 harry was having NONE of it so he sends advisors (wink,wink) in 1954 and 50,000 lives and untold BILLIONS later we QUIT! in 1976 -22 YEARS later -look it up $350k and leave me alone-and we ask ourselves ,WHY DO THEY HATE US?
