Well
First of all....not everyone is a singer, you must be "born" with good vocal cords and tubes.
If you are ok starting out there is nothing else you can do but practie practice !!
GOOD LUCK

1. Do people say that you can sing well? If so, pursue some lessons.
2. Make sure the teacher is working on the basics (regardless of style) which include posture, breathing, resonance, vowels, diction, and music reading.
3. Find a teacher that has students that are successful.
Also, If you want to sing pop style - you will probably have to start with some folk music or something simpler before you can explore the sliding, difficult rhythms, and altered style of singing with some more modern styles.
Best of luck!

There are many vocal teachers who claim they can teach any one to sing. Here is one guy who does tours. http://www.claudestein.com/ I took his class. I was a hopeless singer. Since the class I can recognize when I am on key and which muscle, throat, etc movements help. I am still not a great singer, but with more training supposedly any one can get better,

1. your gonna have to start with lessons if not then first try making a clear voice.
2. then try going high as possible singing the DoReMi...
3.Don't go so high that you'll have a croaky voice.from the highest point now keep practicing that note.
4.Your voice might be important but u need to be good at memorizing stanzas.(Every 20min or so it's good to take a drink of water)
5.As u start to get good at memorizing try making different notes out of those words.
6.It may sound as easy but wait your gonna have have soothing or smooth voice that all the notes will flow together gracefully.
7. After u master all these steps, practice, practice, practice!!!Now there can be nothing but practicing.Sooner of later u might get tired of the word practice but remember that's only left.
Hope it helped!!!...

Find someone that you like that is a singer. Copy his or her singing. duplicte their singing as best you can. Do this with several singers that you admire. Then you can start to develop your own voice. Sing along with them as aften as you can. Then get the karoake version and try it on your own. Gradually you will develop your own style, or become a good impressionist.
The Painters of antiquity did this as their training. they would sit in the gallerys and copy the masters, gradually they would develop their own style after learning the basics. I think doing scales is a lot of huey. Streisand says she never does scales, but she does sing in the shower.

A big component of becoming a good singer is gift. If one is "tone deaf", it will not matter if he is in shape, practices or breathes right. If you have a trainable voice, your singing can be perfected with training. A well-trained voice teacher will have breathing exercises that are helpful.

The best thing you can do is find a good voice teacher. Check with your local university or high school. Ask the choir teacher if they can recommend anyone. Or try asking the music director of a church if they know someone. Nothing can replace instant feedback from a good teacher.

1. Get a good vocal teacher
2. Practice exactly what the teacher tells you to practice
3. Practice regularly and often
4. Participate in Yoga because that will also help with your breathing and keeping you in shape.

go out and get a good voice teacher. you can really never know what you sound like because sympathetic vibrations distort your hearing of your voice. a good voice teacher will give you honest critique that you could not possibly give yourself.
a good way to find a voice coach: if you live near a college, then contact one of the music professors there and ask if either they offer voice lessons to the public or if one of their students is interested in coaching you. if all else fails, you can allways advertise in the local paper, or contact an elementary school music teacher to ask if they know anyone who offers voice lessons.

There is no substitute for a voice teacher. Would you play a sport without a coach?
I recommend this non-profit organization.
