I've heard somewhere that when christianity spread, they used the pagan gods as templates for saints. Are there historical references to the old saints that would authenticate them?

I believe some were historic, and some based on Pagan beliefs, but most were a mixture, ie, Pagan god characteristics placed on an individual who was named a saint post humously (I think they all are post humous, so that would explain a lot. )

Everyone who believes in Christ finished work on the cross is a saint due to the conversion by the Holy Spirit. If you mean the Catholic idea of saints, I think most were real people but who knows for sure?

Virtually all of the Catholic Saints were real people; including the 4th century Catholic Bishop (Nicklaus) that the Santa Claus story was based on was a real person, Then later saints sich as Saint Padre Pio, Saint Theresa, Mother Theresa (that is well on her way to Sainthood if not already were real people as well.

Yes. Saints are real people. They can be found in real history. They may have special stories attached, and some may not entirely be true, but they were real.

Yes they were. St Patrick being one. It is because of him we celebrate St Patrick's Day. Look him up. Interesting story that most people know, no matter what country they are from.
