What you are looking for is called "Kanji", there are many websites where this is available. Kanji often involves sacred words or other symbol's relating to the Japanese. To mark one's body with some of these symbol's is offensive to the japanese culture, and one must bear this in mind when undertaking such a venture. Why not do a bit of research into the anthropology of your own race or culture and You may find something that has special meaning and appeal to you. That way Your LIFETIME commitment will allways have meaning to you and you can avoid it becoming "Dated "

I strongly recommend a book that I own that is a wonderful reference book for Hiragana and Katakana.
"Kanj Pict-o-Graphix" by Michael Rowley
ISBN 0-9628137-0-2
Great reference book to lear how to read Japanese script too; reson I bought it was because I was trying to learn to read and write Japanese and it has helped me a lot.
Also, because I will be getting a tattoo of Japanese Kanji letters on my back with the following words:
LOYALTY
DUTY
RESPECT
(selfless)SERVICE
HONOR
INTEGRITY
(personal)COURAGE
All words combines to form the word LEADERSHIP; which is the basis of the Army Values... Oh, did I mention I am a soldier in the US Army?
Cool, huh?

if you're wanting to get a tattoo of a japanese symbol think long and hard about it. because most "japanese" symbols don't mean what they are supposed to mean. the japanese language does not translate perfectly into english. are you japanese?

there are actually three alphabets in japan:
kanji
which is also chinese. they mostly have at least 2 meanings (thousands of symbols)
hiragana
which is phonetic and curvy (48 symbols)
katakana
which is phonetic, used for foreign words and made of straight lines. (ditto i think)
sentecnes are sometimes made of all three kinds of symbols. id get a good book or go to a native speaker. good luck

Try this one:
http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/kanji?SASE=/cgi-bin/j-e/dict
You need to be careful with translations because sometimes one kanji can have different shadings of meaning.
A friend of mine got the kanji for "strong" tattooed on his shoulder and found out later from a native speaker that it meant "strong odor"
The same kanji that means "independent" also means "Germany."
Jeffrey's will let you look up kanji as well as find a translation for a specific word. It would be wise to find a kanji from an English word that appeals to you and then do the reverse look up - look up the kanji and find out how many meanings it has.
It took me about 6 months to find a kanji and then verify that it meant what I thought it meant before I got it tattooed on my lower back.
Hope this helps!

I'm japanes and many people with chines letter tattoo have really funny ones and they say it means strong and powerful but many times it saids stupid and clumsy or inside or something reallys stupid! but um its not really called kanji and maybe its hard to find symbles becuase we have 3 differeent types of writing; hiyagana, katakana, and chines characters. most people have chinese character on there arm but um like chines characters have many different meaning one could have like 6 different meaning but mostly similar but if use a different character to make a word it could mean something completly different even thought it sounds the same! so i advice to look for that online and you will find allot of sites that have really correct transalation and writing!
hope it helped!:/
