I am a Taiwanese. I was named AURA, but my English teacher told me that it is a little weird. Since I am going to study abroad, I think I should have a good English name for myself. Therefore, I want to ask everyone do you have any good name for me. I'd like my name starts with "A" . Thanks for your help!!

I really appreciate everyone's help. You gave me a lot of confidence to keep my name. Actually, I like this name very much but after my teacher told me that "Aura" is a ring of light over a religious person. I start to feel weird to keep this name. However, maybe it is his personal opinion. There are still many peple thinking it is a good name so I will keep using it. And thanks again for giving me so much confidence.

Hey Aura!!! Girl!!! What are you doing? Are you crazy (sorry)?!!!
You have a wonderful name! Do you ever respect yourself? You shouldn't change the name your parents gave you if SOMEBODY has told you that SOMEBODY won't like it!!! You've really shocked me! If I were you I would think I have a cool name!!! Please don't change it for somebody if you happily lived with it till now! Name is not the thing to play with!!!
Hope you will come to the right dicision,
Good luck,
Maria

PS: Just read you details! I know a guy whose name is Anjelko which translates into English like Little Angel! So what is better to be Aura or Little Angel?! I guess both are great! And there are people's name like Jesus and hm.. :D Maria... Jesus is God (for those who believe) and an aura is just the light that surrounds every person no matter if it's religious or not... It can be photoed by special cameras. It shows your health and emotional state... If you maybe want details :), the best colours for aura are light blue, yellow and some other :) Nothing strange to have such a name!!! And by the way that Little Angel is a boy, who is 22 and his name never bothered him!!! And also different words mean different things in different languages! For example, yama is a mountain in Japanese but it is a hole in the earth in Russian, so just the opposite meaning! So don't care what people having other language as yours think of your name! Clever people accept everything! They know this doesn't matter! And the stupids if there will be such and they always are.. you don't need to care about their oppinion! ;)
I really hope this helped you Aura! Stay with your own name!!! And to my own oppinion it sounds beautiful!!!
Good Luck to you,
Maria

Dont listen to your teacher...

Aura is fine...

If you think that is strange...

My name is Pascal Duke England... lol...

im a guy of course...

sounds like

Pa-skull

Talk about catching **** in elementary school for your name being different... whew!

your teacher doesnt know what he is talking about...

it doesnt have to be a religious person to have a aura with them..

they are on everyone...

people of all spiritual, religious, and philisophical backgrounds see them...

they surround the entire body...

sometimes objects have them..

they are merely a weather forcast..

and should be read as such

Aura is a unique name, specially where you come from!
But are you a guy or girl?
Try google and ask for names that start with 'A'

Don't change your name. Aura is a distinctive and pervasive quality or character.

Aura is also a mythological person

However, it may not mean this in Taiwan and as it was chosen by your parents it surely means something nice.

Got the message? Aura is just fine. It is a beautiful name, so keep it. Just make sure it is pronounced correctly. Two syllables, not three. Aw-rah.

Listen, why do you ask for a new name because of your leaving to study abroad? Aura is a wonderful name, really. It is full of poetry. I am Italian and, in my mothertongue, 'aura' means 'sweet and soft breeze'. This name comes from the Latin language.
I don't think it is strange, I think it is rare, schon, trés charmant, muy hermoso. By the way: do you know the story of the girl named Aura in Ovidio's Metamorphoses?

Look at the web searches I did for you:

Andreas Michalopoulos, Ancient Etymologies in Ovid's Metamorphoses: A Commented Lexicon (ARCA (Classical and Medieval Texts, Paper and Monographs) 40). Leeds: Francis Cairns Publications, 2001. Pp. Pp.viii, 204. ISBN 0 905205 98 7. [...]

In the Cephalus and Procris story (7.661-865), which M's Lexicon leaves out, Aurora and Aura are of pivotal importance, in the sense that they relate directly to the plot-structure: in the first part Cephalus is abducted by Aurora and in the second part Procris suspects him of having an affair with a girl named Aura, who is actually aura, the "breeze". As Cephalus, tired after hunting, is addressing the refreshing Aura, the ambiguous talk reaches somebody's ears (aurem); he assumes that aura is a nymph and informs Procris. She thinks her husband has taken a mistress and goes out to catch him in the act. Cephalus sets out for hunting after dawn (Aurorae) and invokes the cool morning breeze (Aura); Procris betrays her presence with a noise and Cephalus, mistaking her for a beast, wounds her gravely with her spear that had an aurea cuspis (cf. 7.673).9 There is no testimony for an etymological connection of Aura with auris, though this connection is significant because it involves communication of sound; but Aurora was etymologized from aurum or aura (Maltby 1991, s.v.). Actually, the circumstances of Procris' death bring Aurora, aura and aurum together, while the Aurorae -- aura link (836-838) serves "as an ironic reminder of Cephalus' first absence and its unhappy results".10

2° Wiki dictionary
aura (plural auras or aurae)

The distinctive atmosphere or quality associated with someone or something.
An invisible force surrounding a living creature [see saints].
An inner or special power/energy mentioned of in graphic novels (manga) Ex: In the Manga/Anime series Yu Yu Hakusho, the amount of power someone has is measured by their Aura

3°aura Online etym-dictionary
1859, "subtle emanation around living beings;" earlier "gentle breeze" (1398), from L. aura "breeze, wind, air," from Gk. aura "breath, breeze," from PIE base *awer-.

I think your English teacher is a very ignorant person or he is a racist, since you informed us you are Taiwanese

Please don't ask for a new name. I like your name. If you come to my country, Italian boys will love you for your name.
Anyway, do as you like.
