I sure do not know if that is the correct spelling for these birds. Any way, I live in Michigan and we had snow for a short time. The bird was not seen. What a Christmas present from God, I saw the heroin in the stream yesterday. What do they do when it is freezing cold? What environment do they need to have to survive the winter?

Yes, what a beatiful present. The herons leave the rivers and go to the grasslands, and survive on catching small mammals, like voles etc., I got this information by typing in BlueHeron, in my search engine. They have heaps of stuff there, go try it. , and learn more about these magnificent birds.!

You may wish to contact the Michigan Audubon Society below to ask your question since they work with the Great Blue Heron. Wikipedia also says that they are supposed to migrate to Southern US or Central America. They may have a hard time surviving the winter that far north. Not sure though since other sites have other answers. You might also contact the local Audoban society or see if a vet in the area rescues birds that maybe too far north to survive.

You have an amazing find indeed.

Open water to fish in. The birds will fly south as it gets colder but if you are lucky they will come back in spring
