Why did the Catholic Church become so corrupt in the 1400s and 1500 and sell indulgences (forgiveness to other people)

Also, why did they try to execute people like Luther who believed in Jesus but didn't believe in their exact teachings?

Thanks.

So the RCC believed dishonesty was not against God's word if it involved money? Lol.

Well it was because of a man named Martin Luther 1483 - 1546 Who wrote a thesis on the Papal abuses. The Roman Catholic church at that period of time was very Strong. The bible was only in Latin and Luther wanted the bible to be read by everyone but the church wanted it kept in Latin, for the clergy. The 1500s (Tutor period) King Henry the 8th.plus Mary Tutor lnown as bloody Mary was the bloodiest time for people being burnt on the stake, for being heretic's.

Not a Christian, but I don't think you have to be to be able to answer this quesiton.

1) Money. Duh.
2.) Because Martin Luther believed that you only needed faith to achieve salvation, which was/is against their beliefs.. Basically, it was a BIG threat to the RCC's power when Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses.

1) the practice of selling indulgances itself is not corrupt. And the Catholic church was not the purveyor of abuse in selling plenary or partial indulgances. It was certain members of localized parishes who were guilty of abusing the sale of indulgences for personal (not church) gain.

2) Luther was not executed. He died an old man in a bed whilst trying to regain membership to the church he had been kicked out of... even luther, for all the damage he did to the church, wanted to remain catholic.

3) Luther did not spearhead the movement for a bible in vernacular. By the time Luther rolled around, the gutenberg bible had been printed off the press in vernacular for decades and was available to anyone who could afford a copy. Prior to that, hand written bibles were VERY expensive and anyone who could afford one could purchase one. They were also written in latin since everyone who could afford one was trained in reading latin (as opposed to making very costly but very limited utility regional dialectical versions).

They sold indulgences to make more money. Selling sacraments and false relics did not bring enough.
They executed people that did not follow their teaching to try to keep the monopoly.

Because, just like here at YA, everyone thinks that their own opinion is right and some will kill and cheat to try to prove it!

Because religion is all about power. And you know the saying about absolute power.
