As far as the nightly rate goes, that depends on if you qualify for government rate, AAA rate, AARP rate, etc. Also, big companies who spend millions of dollars per year on travel usually have negotiated rates. Lastly, weekend rates at business hotels (not resorts) are usually lower than weekday rates.
I would suggest sticking with a widespread chain and signing up with their rewards program. You may earn enough points when you're done to take your family on vacation! In the U.S., Marriott has much to offer as far as different brands to choose from within their chain, and then lots of resorts for which you can redeem your points.

The Choice Hotels chain has had some specials lately. Check their web site. They are a lower end, but decent chain, which include Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn, and others. Also, Best Western often has specials on their website.
If you belong to AAA, AARP, or most any group, try to get a discount based on that. If you work for a big company, specific chains often have discount rates for that company - ask the company travel office.

It's a 8 stays deal or a 16 nights maximum, you can try getting a corporate rate if you use the same chain, you can ask directly the branch for a deal, not the call center.
But maybe your best option will be getting the points/miles
