I'm 25, but kinda clueless about certain things in life. What do you call the manner of death when someone commits suicide by sitting in their car in the garage, while it runs? Is it an asphyxiation? As well, if a person should perish from this, what occurs (How does this happen)? I'm also wondering if there can be a result besides death, such as brain death. An MD's response is especially welcome.

It is death by carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide will unite with the haemoglobin of the red blood cells forming carboxyhaemoglobin, which is unable to carry oxygen. Thus, the body and the most important the brain will be deprived of oxygen, causing brain death, which means life extinct.

It's called death by carbon monoxide. It takes the oxygen from the Car and causes the person to go into a coma or go to sleep due to the lack of oxygen and he will die unless the car runs out of fuel. Some people park in an enclosed garage ot run a pipe from the tail pipe into the car, I guess it can be called asphyxiation but anyhow it causes death unless someone finds them first and if a person is rescued from the car before it kills him it can cause severe brain damage.

To answerers 1, 2 and 4. Isn't answers about asking questions and finding out the answers from different people with different opinions, life experiences etc. If this person is considering suicide, no matter what you say will not prevent this person from doing what they want. I think this question is just about someone asking for information. We shouldn't jump to conclusions!
As for an answer I think its called carbon monoxide poisoning and if a person is found unconscious I think they would have some kind of brain injury.

Well, I am no doctor. But the cause of death would be ruled asphyxiation.
It is carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a rather peaceful way to go. You simply go to sleep and don't wake up.
Unfortunately, a lot of these type of suicides end up taking others with them. they don't stop and think that if they are doing this in an attached garage the fumes are permeating the house.

You're right. Asphyxiation. It is kinda like Hypoxia.....in fact its exactly like Hypemic Hypoxia. Carbon Monoxide has a greater affinity to the hemoglobin the red blood cells. 300 times greater. So when the red blood cells are carrying CO instead of O2 the final symptom is death. Symptoms of Hypemic Hypoxia range from dizziness to nausea to death. After Hypemic Hypoxia you reach death by asphyxiation. There would actually be no pain as described above. You would go unconsious before you die.
There are 4 iron molecules on each hemoglobin that are used to attach either the 02, CO2, or CO. The iron attaches to the Oxeygen portion of all of these.

Carbon Minoxide poisoning. The exhaust that leaves the car has a high level of CM. When you sit in a running car in a enclosed area, you will pass out from lack of oxygen and eventually die.
Brain Damage can occur if you inhale enough CM. It does often result in death.
I hope you are only studying this....

Yes, it's asphyxiation. And, yes, there can be brain damage. If your heart stops and is restarted but too late to prevent brain cells from dying, there could be damage.
If you're asking this question because you're depressed I would suggest seeing a doctor and/or counselor. There are more effective, and less damaging, ways to deal with depression than suicide.
I hope a doctor answers your question too but, regardless, if you have more than a intellectual curiosity about this subject see someone who can provide you with some help.

You die from carbon monoxide poisoning, and yes, you can do yourself some nasty damage without managing to actually kill yourself. Carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain, and other vital organs of oxygen, and even if you recover these organs can be permanently damaged.
It's not pleasant.

yes its a form of suffocation and if you dont do it right you will end up a veggie in a nursing home till you die. you begin to choke on the smell from the exhaust fumes and pass out, then you die fairly quickly because the co2 replaces the oxygen in your system.
