I don't care what people listen to, but I have friends who talk about how great the Bible is and then go listen to Nirvana or Tool or Smashing Pumpkins.

Oh good gawd ..... that's as bad as the hard core christians accusing atheists and saying we can't celebrate "their" holidays. It's just music for crying out loud, it's free for anyone to listen to and enjoy, lyrics not withstanding. Unless you put credance in the messages, in which case I would expect you to be out shooting people after listening to a rap song.

What IS this odd sense of entitlement so many like you have?

There is always someone who won't be pleased with what the watch or listen to. The real truth is "It's just music". We make music for our own enjoyment. Some people, prefer to write about politics, and terrorism, and stuff like that. Toby Keith for example. But the thing is, in this country, you not only have the freedom of religion. You have the freedom of speech. Freedom of speech.. includes music. But the only thing holding a song back about how much they love satan, is a record producer's fear of ratings. Few people would find some songs like that enjoyable.. but many might. And also remember, the Beatles? Most of their songs don't mean a blessed thing. But Don McLean's American Pie, is a story between the lines. When you are listening to these songs you find controversial.. look into them. Some of them don't make a single shred of sense, but some have a story, or a cry for help within the lines. You'd be surprised. But to be honest, i don't think there is anything anybody can do about it... everyone has their freedom of religion and freedom of speech in this country. Which means, they could do alot of things... which includes hating a religion and putting that hate into a song. But this would be an interesting question to ask a band, or a music producer. Why do you market such racist and prejudice music?

Here's something I have believed for a long time::
Input = Output
Whatever you put into your brain will eventually come out.
That means if you listen to rap music with explicit lyrics, at some point in your life, those words will influence your words or actions.
That also means that if you listen to Christian music, you will spread positive messages through your words and actions.

Does anyone remember this song from Sunday School when you were 5?
-Be careful little eyes what you see,
Be careful little ears what you hear,
For the Father up above
He is watching you with love,
So be careful little eyes what you see.

I think we could ALL improve by just remembering what we were taught when we were young.

------------------------------

If you are listening to music that you think you shouldn't be listening to, you're probably right in thinking you shouldn't be listening to it. God gave us instincts for a good reason.
I have some suggestions for those of you who want to break an addiction to secular music.
If you like rock, you might try listening to...
-- Relient K
-- Pillar
-- Switchfoot
-- Kutless
If you like rap, you might enjoy..
-- Grits
-- TobyMac
-- KJ52
-- DC Talk (some of their early '90s stuff is way cool)
Better yet, instead of listening to music in your free time, try reading your Bible and praying. That is the purest input your body can get, and it will strengthen your relationship with God.

Just remember (and I speak from experience...), secular music WILL deteriorate your life and make you feel worthless if left to do its work. Even the music that doesn't jump right out as being bad music will eventually harm your relationship with God. One type of music leads to another, and before you know it, you'll be farther in over your head than you ever intended.

There are Christians at all levels of spiritual growth and some do not realize that their relationship with G-d is no different then any other relationship. Just as in a marriage etc., you only get out of something from what you put in (sowing and reaping). Let me suggest that if you are not a Christian, you become one. Then practice what I suggest. Get into the word, pray, meditate and worship on a regular basis. See how that changes your life. Possibly your friends may take notice and then you'll all be better off.

Because they like the "music". Most intelligent people can differentiate between taste for music and the 'message' from a musician. And most of the time only the musician actually knows what message they are actually trying to convey, so it is not necessarily anti-religious in content.
