I have a little boy puppy who is 6 days old, i also have another litter by a different mum who are 3 weeks old and doing fine. The mum of the 6 day old, who we have called baby, her milk has dried up compleatly and gone. The baby is whining all the time, crying , obv hungry and poss in pain as the mum, who cant settle keeps following me with the baby in its mouth and dropping it then laying with it where ever i stop. I will add the mum is my dog, love her to bits she follows me everywhere normally, i have slept with the dog and cuddle the baby for the last 4 nights, i have put the baby on baby milk diluted, warmed etc, but he is still screaching . I have tried everything and have not slept properly in 4 days!! So last night at 3am, when i could take the babys crying no more, felt so sorry for him, i put him with the other dog with older pups, who mothered him , and now he is cuddled up with the older puppies and she is feeding him, is this wrong and now my dog is pineing obviously

No hunnie, you did the best thing you could do. There are several dogs that have milk problems, and with just one pup, she would dry up very soon. Give the mother Baby a teady bear or something it can cuddle with for a while, and give her the pup for a little while each day so that it doesn't forget she's his mother, and so she still has contact with the pup. Leave him with the adoptive mother over night, so that he can get the best fill possible. Make sure he's not away from the mother with milk for any more than 15 minutes at a time and give Babe as much love and attention as possible.
Hope this helps, Any more questions email me and i will be more than willing to help.
Best Wishes hun.

Hi Suzie, You did the right thing. Even the mommy dog was asking you for help. If you hadn't done what you did,the little guy would of died. There nothing at all wrong with this. You saved the baby's life. Now you will want to keep the little guy. At least i would. He's alittle fighter, and will be a very good dog. A Friend.

It sounds like he probably got colostrum from his mother, which is certainly good. The other ***** should be a perfect substitute as long as the pup is eating solid food by the time she weens the older litter. If not, you can visit your vet or substitute the recipe below. Funny that Yahoo automatically censors the word ***** even when it is in polite context.

Mother's Milk Substitute for Kittens and Puppies
240 ml (8 oz) Homogenized (3.25% milk fat) or evaporated milk (if you use evaporated milk, dilute two parts milk in one part water). Mother's milk substitutes are also available at a vet's office.
5 ml (1 teaspoon) Canola oil
1 drop Multivitamins for humans (or for kittens)
2 Egg yolks
5 ml (1 teaspoon) Corn syrup

Have the puppies seen a vet yet? That should be the person addressing these concerns. And the mama dog should not be spayed until the pups are weaned and the milk is gone, so make an appointment for two months from now and then keep it.

You have done the right thing - a puppy needs dogs milk. You might want to get some fomula FROM THE VET - not baby milk - to supliment the milk from the dog feeding him.

Yes mum will pinr but she can still see her puppy and lick / clean him.

You can also phone the RSPCA for advice.

If the other female will continue producing milk and caring for the pup, leave him with her. Her milk is better for the puppy than having to bottle feed formula.

do not dilute it and mix some high protein baby cereal in with it and feed every 3 hours. You might see if the other female will take it in. I had a dog that nursed a baby rabbit after I dound alone in our yard

Whatever gets food into the puppy is not wrong! Plus his birth mother obviously wanted you to solve the problem, that is why she kept leaving the pup at your feet.........she may still pine.....but she is glad you are keeping her pup alive by letting the other mother feed it.....

Sounds like you found the right solution; if the other dog 'adopts' this pup, everything will be fine.

get the puppy checked out by a vet toot sweet......and if it is sick it may make the others sick...mums often kill or ignore puppies if they think they are ill....take notice of her also take her to the vet she may have an infection which passes to the puppy and your other ones......
