He is a older dog, not a puppy. I recently got him about a month ago and he has rapidly lost weight. I feed him dry and wet food that his onwer fed him, but he wont eat. Well he eats but small amounts.

The number one Factor

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Make sure that his joy begins a new each morning with the 2 of you and continues thru out the day. Make him know how overjoyed you are each and every time you see him give him praise
even if he hasn't done anything.

My little dachshund lost her best friend after 11 years of sleeping with sweetpea....all while going thru chemo therapy. Her oncologist gave me these words of advice and wisdom.

POSITIVE Reinforcment in what ever form it takes.

Good Luck ! I hope it all turns out good!

I always adopt old dogs and it can be challenging. Your dog is a pack animal. In his case, he's been removed from his alpha male, his pack and everything he's used to. He needs to bond with you now. As the previous person stated, act overjoyed when you see him. Give him lots of treats. Of course you need to find out what treats he likes.
Physical contact is something a dog responds well to. It calms them down. What I would do with my adoption is initially stay home for a few days and just sit on the couch and pet him. Carry him around with me. Cuddle and snuggle all the time.
Lots of love, treats, walks and toys is what does the trick for me. Also, try speaking with your vet and dog trainers (yellow pages).

First, take him to a vet to make sure that there is nothing wrong physically....Once you have established that he is okay then you can proceed....he is eating & drinking & going to the bathroom. Establish a routine,,,,,he needs this to make him feel secure, give him space.. & remain calm don`t push.......He will adjust given consistency, & love......I have fostered & adopted many dogs through the years & it is a mutally rewarding situation for both of you. Good luck

try some special treats to tempt him into eating, he will adjust but you just have to give him time, spend plenty of time with him, take him for walks, etc
