For me the reason is simple, on the holidays is when I got to spend time with my family that is gone. The one I miss the most is my grandma, she passed away just a couple weeks after christmas about 15 years ago. She blamed me for making her sick and dying. Being 11 years old it was hard for me to understand how I did that to her. Christmas was the last holiday that we spent together and grandma was able to be herself.

Because you associate the holidays with past memories. In the past, as a child in particular, you most likely spent your holidays with family. That is what you grew up with and came to expect. When you are alone on the holidays, your mind wanders back to the past and how much fun you had then. You long for those days and for those people to be around again. It is very common. I am sorry you are missing your dad and family. I am sure, wherever they are, they miss you too.

Because it is instilled inside of you that families are to be together on the holidays. And everyone else you know is off with family and if your not..then you are left alone.
Also, families come together, most everyone is in light spirits, goofing around, making jokes...having fun and making memories. Those are the moments that stick in your mind and they happen during the holidays...causing you to associate good times with holidays..therefore...leaving you longing for those moments.
sigh..........I miss my dad too.I know how you feel. lol

Holidays usually mean family and good memories. I think it is very common to be sad about the ones who you can't be with for whatever the reason.
