There are a couple of reasons for this...
First it hurts a little bit, they have nerve endings under their skin that are affected by their hair, And when rubbed backwards it pulls them, causing a little twinge of pain.
Second, Cats like being neat, and clean, They don't like getting anything on their fur, and don't like it out of place. They are very particular animals, Be careful and gentle, Don't want to hurt the little things.
Take care.

Most cats do usually not like it when they are pet against the grain. However all 3 of my cats I have had since they were newborns. If you begin reading them backwards while they are still young enough I believe that maybe the poor that the hair follicle belongs to may not have tightened up so much around it. So now as adults they not only love being pet against the grain but they are the fuzzies things ever. But unless your cat has been this way since birth I would not advise petting any adult cat backwards

I prefer hair which is shoulder length or longer, And since that men who like women are more often then not straight, they like long hair because this looks more feminine, as most males have short hair.

Their hair doesnt come straight out. It comes out at an angle so when its rubbed backwards its painful to them.

Because cats are very well-groomed animals, especially house cats. Notice how they constantly lick themselves clean and even have a malady associated with all that neatness (hairballs).

My cat loves it. She also seems to like having her belly rubbed as she'll turn over while you pet her.

Try rubbing your arm hair or leg hair backwards and see if you like it. I don't...it sort of hurts...

It doesn't feel good. Try "petting" your hair the wrong way.
