I paid for my computer by way of rent to own and never got an actual windows xp disk. I do own my computer and paid way to much for it. now i have close to 250,000 nodes and would like to reformat my hard drive to get rid of the sluggishness, but i don't want to download a iso or something and not be able to update. so do i really have to buy the new software or can i like rip the current installation to ext. or disk and start fresh with it? im not a programmer or anything but i now the lingo, so ill understand and would like educated opinions on this. THANX.

hey buddy...see...you cannnot transferr(copy paste)os...you have to run the setup..where all the os regsitery files(registery is the dna of your os )is installed...
hence...you can make a image of original xp disk...and then run the setup...or else...there is an option of system back up..where your current os settings is stored...but again after format you have to runt he setup!!
thats all bro...good luck...and if you have nodes in 10 thousand..then why just run the disk cleanup and defragmenter...the computers will run better...
or else run the win update...
so this is all i cna provide...actually i am alos a rookie programmer doing diploam in info tech...so i have experience abut installation of os..hope this helps you...
only option is get a originalx p cd from friend and make an image on cd and keep it as backup..very important cd!!

Who is the manufacturer of the computer? They may be able to provide you with an OS and driver disks. As far as copying the OS from an already installed state you won't be able to copy that to a disk by any conventional means. I think Norton Ghost might do that, but I'm not sure.
What you should plan on doing is backing up all your data, and reinstalling with an OS disk. The XP disks are generic disks, the important part is the product key (probably OEM). That's the sticker that should be on your machine that says windows XP and has a 25 digit alphanumeric code on it. That's your licence and you will need(probably) to reinstall windows XP.
If your computer didn't come with that it's kinda shady.
In this order I would contact 1the agency you bought it from, 2 the manufacturer,3 Microsoft.
You may also need the drivers CD, depending on what kind of hardware you have. Contact the manufacturer or download them from the manufacturer's website.
1 Get product key
2 Get necessary software
3 Backup data
4 Reinstall OS and drivers

If you are using xp, slip into your bios (F2) or whichever key gets you there, some system manufacturers, when sold with preinstalled software partition the hard drive to support a utility or restoration partition. See if you can boot to this partition, if it is a restoration partition, you should be able to restore windows xp as if it were new and have a completely new operating system ready for registering. Be sure to back-up if needed.

YUP...Thats how they all come. You have to make copies of your XP that comes with the machine. Its in the program list off the start menu. I just made mine yesterday. Takes 2 DVD's or 17 CD's...

There might be a partition on your hard drive that you should have used to create a recovery CD when you got the computer.

Do a search on Recovery in your help.

Run a defrag. That might help your performance.
