I came home at 930 tonight and saw my 12 year old shih tzu in a daze. I rushed her to the emergency vet which is a half a mile away. They rushed her in the back and then came and told me she had a grand maul siezure. She has never had a seizure before. She died. I feel so guilty for leaving today but she was fine this am. She was even playing with her new christmas toys. But my question is why dont the other dogs notice shes not here? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Your dogs have noticed. Maybe they just think she went somewhere and will be back soon so the loss has not set in yet. Last year we lost one of our chihuahuas. She was a very special dog, sick from birth, according to several vets she would died within 2-3 months from birth, she loved almost four years. She was sick a few days before she died. For over a week after she died, the house was so quiet. people who know chihuahuas know how vocal they can be. There was a funeral quietness about everything as the dogs paid their respects to our family and the loss of our precious Honeybunch. So to tyke who always says dogs have no brains, think about that!

Sorry about your loss. It is hard to loss a beloved pet particularly this time of year. In response to your question. Some dogs are not as intuitive as people. They don't realize when one animal is missing. Other dogs react or even overreact to the loss of an animal in the home. I had a cat that had one kitten the kitten died when it was 2 years old of a seizure and the mother cat was never the same. She died a few months later. Yet I had a cat that was raised with a dog for 11 years and when the dog died the cat didn't seem to notice that the dog was gone.

I am sorry for your lost. I know it is hard to loose a pet. Especially at this time of year. Dogs do notice just not like people. They tend to get over the fact that a pet is missing quicker then we do and it is as if the animal wasn't even there in the first place. My Mom had 2 cats a male and female. When the male died I think she missed him at first and it has been 8 yrs. and she doesn't even act like he is gone. She acts like she was always the only cat in the house. They were sister and half brother Hope that this helps. The pain of loosing a beloved pet does get better with time.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.

One of my dogs passed away a year and a half ago, and when I came home from the veterinary clinic, my dogs didn't seem to notice that she wasn't with me until about 2 days later. After that, they seemed to go through a morning period with me. I can tell you that as hard as it is, try not to feel guilty about it, there was nothing that you could do about it. I still feel guilty about my dog dieing, but just try to think of all of the good times that you had with her and what a great life that you gave her.

Oh, I'm so sorry for you loss. Please don't blame yourself an or feel guilty. It would have happened even if you stayed home. It was probably her time to go. I know ho painful it is, but you need to not blame yourself.

I'm sure that your other dogs will notice that she's gone soon. Maybe they just think you took her somewhere and she's coming back soon.

Again, my deepest sympathies. Know that your dog will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

First let me say, I am very sorry for you. Losing a pet can be very painful, especially one that age. Secondly, I feel, just like humans, it takes time. Eventually they will notice and you will see it. Kind of like humans when they are in shock or disbelief. Dogs can and do sense things are different or wrong.

Oh I'm so sorry.
Trust me they notice, they just may not be showing it. Just like people each dog deals with pain and grief in their own way. Some really show their grief others will be more clingy to each other or to you. Hold onto each other and show your love to the others that remain. Life is way too short.
Run free.....

Dogs sweat through panting.

even though "dogs may only be dogs", they are a pack, and when one of the pack goes missing, then they have to establish a new order, so yes, they do notice. They just don't notice like we do.

and for those of you that think "dogs are just dogs", for your info, some people are unable to have children, and these "dogs" ARE our children!

I'm sorry for your loss, It will get better.

maybe they knew she was gonna die or was sick, animals have a different kind of sense for these things, they may have smelled death or illness on her and know its better for her to be gone from there, the smell might not have sat right with them.
