There are plenty of poverty stricken places on the earth where you can live very cheaply. However, if you are in some place with no or little infrastructure and fall ill you may end up spending a lot of money to get to where you can get treatment. So "to live" is a very important part of the question here. Thailand is nice-very cheap, but has all the "frills" Westerners like.
