We get Directtv and it's an extra 10 bucks a month to get 12 channels in HD ( this includes the local channels) and I know the local cable stations charge about 20 bucks extra to get a few HD channels. It's hard not to get it once you see how clear the football games and stuff come in.
so each provider will be different, you just have to call but it will most likely cost more each month to get the HD channels.

If the TV has a cable tuner, yes it will work (Most HDTVs support at least Clear-QAM, that is, free cable). Some TVs include a cable card slot as well. Then you can get a cable card from your service provider and get rid of the set top box.
A warning though. Analog cable looks pretty bad on HDTV. You will need to upgrade to digital cable and even better to HDTV.

Yes, but unless you pay for "digital cable" you won't get HDTV quality reception.

You need another box that provides the same connections (which would be an HD box), or use the inputs on your TV that box has. If you actually have a TV, you will have those inputs.

Sure, but it would not be in the widescreen format and would not be anywhere near as clear.
