Well, it depends. How hard you swim at night will affect your muscle building. I am a varsity swimming in high school, and I'm pretty skinny. Yes, I work my butt off in practice, and yes, our practices are hard. The thing is, muscle building relies on carbohydrate intake/usage. If you're training hard, weightlifting + swimming (like i do), and your body uses up as much or more carbohydrates than you put in, your body's not going to have extra carbohydrates for muscle building. Swimming's a great way to get in shape and stay in shape. If you want to go for muscle building, make sure you eat plenty of carbohydrates and, if you do swim, don't expend too much of those carbs.
Hope this helps, and good luck on muscle building =)

Yes, in fact my dr. just recommended I start swimming about 2 months ago. I've been swimming for 30 minutes 3x per week since then (almost faithfully) and have DEFINITELY noticed a difference. I have not done anything amazing, but it has built muscle and reduced some fat. I have a long way to go, but it is a really good workout!

Swimming is more of an aerobic/cardio exercise. It'll make you lose fat before you gain muscle from it. You'll gain little muscle from swimming.
If you want to gain muscle, start weight training w/ a proper diet.

It does in the arms but mainly use swimming for BURNING CALORIES..and then it tones all areas..gets rid of fat! But make sure you are doing laps not just swimming around. I lost so much weight and it makes you FEEL SO GOOD.

Absolutely. Your body may not lose fat as quickly, because it senses the water as cold and you need body fat to keep you warm. Great form of exercise for all muscles, joints and heart!
