Our next door neighbor tried to sue us over something very petty. His case was thrown out of court but now he keeps spreading horrible lies about my family in my neighborhood. Those that know us also know he is full of c-r-a-p, but they also tell me when he has made up a new "drama" involving us that we have done to him lately. First of all we don't talk to the guy and haven't in months on the advice of a lawyer. Every other week it seems he has spread around a new different story about us. This week he told people we busted his car windshield out with an apple. Last couple of weeks he told people we were dumping trash in his yard. It's really crazy but the other neighbors say they don't really want to help by submitting anything in writing that he is spreading these rumors because they are afraid he will find something to sue them for as well. All we can do is ignore him and go about our business but is this man all there upstairs? I bought my house and I don't want to move.

He put up a lighted cross in his front yard and he makes sure to bring up the subject of going to church after he yacks these rumors.

NO re-action.
NO attention.
NO response, at all.
That would be my advice in this situation.
People feed off of any energy in this situation.
Just refuse to give it to them, that would be the way to go.

I would discuss this with your lawyer. If he is spreading lies about you this could be possible slander to your good reputation in the neighborhood. This is a tough question. I hate that you are in this dilemma. But if most know that he is full of it, I would bet to say that no one pays any attention to him. They may nod at him and it goes in one ear and out of the other. Yes your lawyer is right and to stay away from him. I would also bet to say if he does not get a reaction from you he will eventually move on to his next victim. Again I am sorry that you have to put up with this. Good luck

have a neighborhood get together if you can't ignore the freak...break out some cookies and coffee and maybe the topic of the strange weirdo will come up and then you can all agree to ignore the guy and then you won't be worried about anything he does or says from now on.

yes ignore him
also install a security system that scans yours and his property so that you have on camera aimed at yours and his property for the specific purpose to caught any devious acts
that he might later try and contribute to you.
if you are in any way spiritual please pray for the guy and send him good tidings (in thought and visualization) I know he is not someone who has endeared himself to you but I am suggesting this because he is obviously someone who is ill. Does he live alone?
How old is he? He may be suffering from dementia or some other disease..seriously.
Find a way to meditate to keep your own selves calm because
stress can weaken your immune system You have my best wishes for your tranquility
peace.

If he goes to Church, then I would try to contact the minster and tell him your problem and see if he can intervene, you have done everything else, what else can hurt? I don't understand why people work so hard to buy a home and some jerk, makes your life miserable.

Doing back to him what he say's you are doing is not right. It makes you as bad as him. You have to ignore it, hard as it may be. You are giving him your power by letting this upset you. The people in your area know you aren't doing these things, so who cares what anybody else thinks. You know your not doing it. I also think that if you do see him, kindness is the best because.. nothing annoys your enemies so much as to be kind to them.

the question is: do you have the time? i'd sue him back. use something vague like religious persecution. frivolous; perhaps, but so are his acusations. file a secondary suit of libel or slander or something. let him know you have as much spare time and money as he does. if that doesn't work, start complaining of noise, smells, etc to the police. be a bigger pain in the a** then he is. another one of my favorites is subscribing him to mass mailings of (you said he was a staunch church goer) something "un-Godly". use gay porn, swinger magazines, "high times". have fun with it. also, make sure you have the political capital to pull it off. be sure to befriend the ones he complains to. don't get mad, get even. good luck. he sounds like a dick.

Ignore him.
Encourage your neighbors to ignore him
Send Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons to his house.
Start doing some of the things he accuses you of. Hey, if your gonna do the time, you may as well do the crime. Nothing big, but garbage is harmless. Especially rotten garbage.
OR
Kill him with kindness. Start greeting him by name with big smiles and a friendly (loud) hello every time you see him.
Bring him baked goods in pretty baskets and put his garbage out for him.
If you have children, have them make drawings for him.
Put Bible verses on pretty post cards and send them.

if you do decide to sue over this, please remember that the judge can only give you what you ask for - so make sure to ask for enough to make him loose his house or he has to sell it to pay you (for EACH offense.)
chances are you won't get what you ask for, but you never get more than what you ask for.
i don't know what size town you are in, but could you let his family (might have to look the name up in the phone book) know what he's doing? they might have a better idea as to what's going on.

Police report, lawsuit, arbitrations, check on violations of city bylaw, even stupid things like his fence being an inch over on city property.
