Yes they can. I don't see a Psych. for my Panic/Anxiety attacks...my pcp takes care of me there. I don't think there is a need to see one unless you are having other issues but they are good for medication management.

I'm in the US (insurance may change by country), and I've been on and off anti-anxiety meds for some years now. I've never had to get them from a psychiatrist; always it's from my primary care physician. Most of them have got a standard depression/anxiety test to give you (not a medical test, but questions and answers) to document the need for the meds, and it's not tricky.

Xanax treats the symptom--an *episode* of anxiety--but you'll more likely be put on something like Lexipro or Zoloft to maintain the proper brain chemistry to combat your condition. These drugs are not permanent, and often they'll help your brain chemistry right itself, so that you can then wean yourself off them.

Along with medicine, it helps to do a little behavior modification. My doctor recommended the book FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY by Susan Jeffers, and it proved very useful for me.

Good luck!

Your pcp can prescribe anxiety meds. However it will depend on your insurance whether it will be covered by a Doctor. Most times it will be denied unless it comes from a Mental health doctor. They have many clinics for mental health that you could get into quickly until you can get your appt.

Yes, your PCP can prescrible anti anxiety meds and antidepressants. Many pcps don't like to prescrible them though. I think they are afraid of the people that just like to take them because they have an addiction to them. Be sincere to your doc and tell him it's urgent you have them.
