i recently got a 8 week old kitten it is a boy we called him garfield. He is missing his mum obviously and hiding and wont come out. He doesnt like to be patted or cuddled and i am seriously considering taking him back because it breaks my heart to see him like this . he is meowing all the time and it is louder when we are home we have two children who are 1 and 3 and they dont go near him. Oh by the way do boy kittens seem to meow louder then girl ones cause ive had both and his definatley louder lol

OH- I hate to hear that and you should check that the kitten is actually that old- the people may have gave him away too early and not said anything!- If he hiding and is the age you say then someone or something has scared him and he will take a while to adjust- a big change in atmosphere and smell will keep him away until he gets used to you and your family- Give him a chance and alot of "hey- but we do not see u" - u know- a treat but not too much "i want to grab u" kind of way! He will come around and your babes will have him when they are teens!

He's very scared and he doesn't know you yet. To him, you're the big scary monsters who took him away from Mama right now.

You need to get him associating you with good things. Take him somewhere quiet away from the kids and bring some treats with you. Give him the treats one at a time as you pet him gently and talk to him quietly, and play with him one-on-one. Don't expect him to suddenly stop meowing, though - kittens tend to meow more than adults, and some cats are just more talkative than others.

BTW - it's not a gender thing. I've got a boy and a girl cat, and the girl is louder and more talkative than the boy.

I am no expert, however I have quite a bit of experience with both genders of cats, and I will tell you that vocalisation is really more dependant on breed than gender. Your new boy kitten probably just has more vocal genes than your previous girl kitty.
As far as his shyness and hiding: he is in a new place with new scents and sounds and people. Give him a week or so (at the most), he should come around. The meowing can be intolerable ( I know, I own two Siamese) but it will likely decrease as he become more comfortable in his new home. Don't give up, just try to keep loud noises to a minimum and give him his space. He will start to explore when he is ready, and will start warming up to y'all in no time. Good luck!

Hi !
Put his kitty litter ,food and water in the room he seems to hid in all the time(if it's possible ).Some kittens use kitty litter straight away and some need training.Where ever he is hiding scrunch a towel up and put it kinda like half under and half out of the place he is hiding .All my cats/kittens have loved the feel of the towelling and he might just curl up in it .Only feed him wet food until you are sure he is eating enough .Some young kittens dont take to cat bickies straight away.I'd definately be spending some time with him tho.
Just love and feed him and he should come right . I'm sure you will do fine !!

Poor baby!

Yes, boy kittens do tend to be more vociferous. Though I've had a couple of girls who could be chatterboxes.

He's just a little guy. He'll come out when he's ready to: My cats have hidden up to 3 days after i've moved, and these were adult cats. You might try leaving food or tuna water near where you hear him so he can smell it. And eventually come out to eat.

Good luck!

he's lonely. how long have you had him??

when i get new kittens i do 2 things.

1. Get two of them. they can keep each other company. If they are from the same litter it helps. I always get my animals in pairs, cats or dogs. consider getting him another kitten close to the same age to play with

2. I read this in a magazine one time and it worked. get one of those big clocks that tick really loud and wrap it in a blanket and put it in the kitten's bed. The clock will remind him of his mother's heartbeat and help him sleep.

cute name for him.

yea he probably is missing his family but give him some food and treats for him to come out then keep doing this and he will eventually like to come next to you. Also cuddle him and pat him when he eats your treat and keep doing it constantly so he will get use to it.
