At this point, no one is totally certain. The obvious thing that we can determine are that these are supernatural beings that do not currently appear on earth. There is an elevated possibility that these creatures are spiritual beings, that will be released from some sort of underworld dimension to torment unrepentent sinners and blasphemers of God. However, it is is possible that they will have this visible form in this physical realm also. It is difficult to say at this point, because the book of Revelation sometimes is showing you things as they appear in the spirit realm.
There has been much speculation through the years regarding these beings, however. Some have made the point that the things John was allowed to see in the future would have looked very foreign to him, and would have been very difficult for him to describe adequately with his first century understanding of things. It has been suggested that these creatures that he saw could be some form of heavy weaponry, such as battle tanks or helicopters, or the like. I wouldn't rule out this possibility either. But no one will know for sure until that day arrives.
I think the bottom line is this: no one should think that they are going to defy God and get off light. It says in another place later on, that whoever worships the image of the beast (the antichrist) or takes his mark in their body will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb, and the smoke of their torment rises up forever and ever, and they have no rest day or night. That is some serious stuff.

What you have to remember about the book of Revelation is that it was written by a man in Bible times seeing the future. There were no airplanes or guns or bombs or helicopters, etc. in those times. When he saw these things he had to draw from his very limited knowledge of things he could relate to in order to describe them. How would a person who had never seen or heard of a helicopter with a gun or laser attached to it describe it? Maybe as a locust who strikes people as a scorpion?

The locusts are Jehovah's Witnesses who keep telling the truth and those who have been teaching lies for so long are tormented by the hearing of it.

I believe they refer to an army of demon spirits which will be released into the earth. Note it is a "star fallen from heaven" who releases them from the bottomless pit (better, the abyss). Stars are often symbolic of angels, and I believe the reference is to one of Satan's angels. (I believe fallen angels are distinct from demons, the former being situate in the heavens; the latter being earthbound)
They are granted authority to torment unbelievers.
Note the description:
"as horse prepared for battle" - this speaks of order and strategy.
"on their heads, as it were, crowns like gold" Gold speaks of divinity, so these beings will approach men under the guise of being god-like helpers
"their faces were like the faces of men" They will present themselves as possessing the same basic disposition and interests of common people
"They had hair like the hair of a woman" This speaks of feigned submissiveness, as long hair speaks of a woman as being under the authority of a man (See I Corinthians 11:2-10)
"And their teeth were like the teeth of lions" Now we see the true character and nature of the beast emerging (Compare I Peter 5:8)
"and they had breastplates like breastplates of iron" This speaks of their being totally ruthless and devoid of compassion.
"and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle" I think here again we see them as a vast army, disciplined, aggressive, overwhelming.
"And they had tails like scorpions, and stings, and in their tail is there power to hurt men for five months" The sting of a scorpion is notoriously painful - could be physical or psychological torment; demons are capable of producing both. I would say the five months indicate their power to torment is limited in duration (compare Revelation 2:10)
"They have as king over them the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek he has the name Apollyon" This pretty well confirms in my mind that the description given is of demonic beings, not literal locusts. The two names are Hebrew and Greek equivalents which mean a Destroyer.
For a comparable Old Testament passage see the Book of Joel, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 verses 1-11
In summary, I believe this is 1 of 7 devastating judgments under the time of the trumpet judgments that will precede Christ's return to earth.

You cannot isolate verses in Revelation and disect them for their multiple meanings, it will never make any sense. Revelation demands a much larger context than rest of the NT.
It requires a 20 ft. long answer, and I'm getting back to celebrating Christmas.

revalation is full of symbolism and is not literal, so its tought to describe, but it is likely the locusts are those whom are or are not in league with the anti christ.
