Suicide is murder, and is therefore also a sin. [Exodus 20:13 "Thou shalt not kill."]

But if you have Jesus as your Saviour and accept His forgiveness, then that sin (and all your other ones) will be atoned for and you will go to heaven. [John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."]

But don't use that as an excuse to justify suicide, because the Bible also says "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test." [Deuteronomy 6:16]

The Bible doesn't talk about it specifically. But you won't find many particular sins mentioned specifically. I want to be very careful here, in case someone you love has committed suicide or if you are considering it. First of all, if you are considering it, please seek help somewhere other than Yahoo Ask. Talk to your pastor or some professional.

Now, the Bible makes it clear that we are all sinners. We all violate Gods laws.

When you accept Christ as your savior, do you stop sinning? Probably not. I haven't. While I try to stay away from sin, I do sin from time to time. Am I going to hell? No. I'm an imperfect creature working to perfect myself.

Suicide is no different from lying or stealing. etc. Therefore, suicide shouldn't prevent you from entering heaven.

A member of our church committed suicide years ago and our pastor presented a sermon talking about the subject.

I'm a bible believing Christian that goes to a Baptist church. Be careful about your church's dogma. Some faiths (Catholic?) believe that Suicide is not forgiven, but I believe they are wrong in this regard.

Good luck to you and I hope you find an answer to this very serious question.

A peson who has trusted Jesus as Savior is free from the penalty for sins. Romans 8:1

But a believer who commits suicide is certainly not trusting His God for his life and circumstances her-- so there is room for question about whether he has truly trusted the Lord with His eternal soul. I cannot say that a true believer would NEVER commit suicide. I just don't know. Anyone can be emotionally distraught and struggle to cope. But is is surely a tragedy no matter the circumstances.

This is the only reference on-line I have.

If you're considering suicide or a the surviver left after someone else's suicide I ask you to pick up the phone and call someone.

I'm not an advocate one way or the other but if the question is on your mind for any reason, take the time to work through what brought it there.

The Bible never says that suicide is unforgiven or you're going to hell if you commit suicide. That something that developed out of the Catholic church. It does say that murder is a sin, but if you're already a believer then your sins are already forgiven. You can't go to hell just by committing suicide. Heaven and Hell are not given to us by our own deeds.

Exodus 20:13 Thou Shalt not kill. It is one of the commandments that we are not to kill. Thus suicide is killing yourself. Whether it will be forgiven or not will be judged by God. Many people in the bible started off sinning and changed. Suicide is a desperate attempt and despair. Personally I feel God will Judge each accordingly, but that he will also take into consideration the situation behind the action.

Somewhere either in one of the books of Samuel or of Kings, King Saul and his army is about to be wiped out by a superior force of Phillistines and King Saul falls on his own sword rather than have the annointed holy king of Israel fall into enemy hands. I don't think Saul is ever condemned for committing suicide. I also don't know if suicide under those conditions is permitted, but it is understandable.

The Bible says things about suicide that you probably won't hear in church.

It's better to kill yourself (or have someone assist your suicide) than to be killed by a woman. - Judges 9:52-53

Suicide is a noble thing if it results in the death of your enemies (including civilians). - Judges 16:29-30

At the end of the world many will try to commit suicide to escape God's torments, but God won't let them. - Revelation 9:6

The bible doesn't say specifically say that suicide is sin, but it does say things like (1 corinthians 6:19) That our bodies/lives do not belong to us, we've been bought with the blood of Jesus. The idea being, if my body doesn't belong to me, then I can't make the decision to end my life. The only one who has a right to end life is the one who creates life or one who purchases a life. When Jesus died on the cross for our sin, he purchased our lives. His death on the cross purchased our salvation and our lives. Hope this helps.
