you need to find the one that has the best stain and wear resistance. I forget whether that means go with nylon or something else... Ask the salesman. Also, get good pad underneath. The best they sell. I would probably avoid berbers, because if one of your cats picks at it, it could cause a major disaster due to it being one continuous strand of fiber. Look for carpets with a high number of twists in the strand too. I wouldn't skimp on carpeting. You should plan to pay at least $25 per yard, installed, and probably more.

For the past 12 years I have used Berber and would never consider anything else. It comes in many neutral colors and patterns for any decor. Cleaning is easy. I have cats and spots can be removed with damp sponging and Woolite Oxy Deep. The Berber I have now is made from recycled plastic soda bottles. It looks no different from fiber made and cleanup is great.

Berber, type of carpet, not brand, best carpet for high traffic, children & pets. Padding is important, choose the best you can afford, it increases the life of the carpet.

If you have kids and cats let me suggest..pergo and throw rugs. Throw rugs have no padding to suck in a stain so they clean well and dry fast.
Nothing better than cat urine in your padding (that you paid $1000. for) you have to treat the foundation to get it out.

Look and find something pleasing to you and then ask the sale person if this would work well for your use.
