Cats normal instinctual behaviour is to as soon as they stop being a kitten to explore neighborhood and then stake out their own territory-mark with urine etc this territory they will patrol on a regular ,just about daily basis, they will also hunt, look for mates and so forth. If you want the Cat to stay with you and not roam then #1-get fixed if you haven't already-also better for their health-protects from certain cancer and many other illnesses#2 make it a inside cat. Since your cat is also a male its even more instinct, its Naure to check out its territory and also to look for and find females and other cats-cats are social.Your cat, unless made into a Inside Cat(much safer and inside cats do live much longer) spends its day(s)pretty much the same as the big cats in the wild-patrol,hunt,sleep, mate and so on.But because its a domesticated animal will come to its homebase to eat spend some time snoozing and then start the process over again. Male cats form large territories-several miles-that they roam and patrol each day. Simply do not allow the cat outside-get and keep a clean litterbox and block easy entry out of the doors. Since used to going outside will whine for 1-2 weeks but will adjust. If your cat is NOT Fixed-Fixing them by the Vet will definitely curb somewhat the Roaming Instinct for decreases the testesterone Hormone also protect from testicular cancer. Outside cats get hit by cars-sometimes taking days to die, are caught by people who sell to Medical Labs-where experiments are dome until they when can no longer be used are euthanized and there arae sick people who will catch and torture, kill. Have always had cats and always because I'd worry way too much-made them inside cats and thet were happy and lived long lives. My sister thought cats should be allowed to raom until one of her cars never came back home and another was hit by a car and she found dead by the side of the road. Be a reasponsible pet owner and get him fixed and keep inside-roaming unfixed tomcats also make a lot of kittens-why there is overpopulation. Usually when a tom cat is gone for days-spending time with a female in heat-average time is 3-4days for romance time to end.

he might be jealous of the kitten. he was the only pet for a long time and he might think that his territory has been invaded.
Both my cats like to go off and explore. He might be making territory somewhere else. do you have any old houses around your area. My cats like to go to one near my house all the time

Hi there...oracle's answer is great explanation. However, I would like to just add to hers that you can get Oreo and your kitten spayed/neutered for a very low fee (e.g. 25-40) or free free (qualifying low income families) by contacting 1-800-SPAY USA http://www.spayusa.org/ to locate a shelter nearby you to perform the procedure. They are more affordable than private veterinarians and perform the procedures daily so this why it is so affordable.

If he is four and hasn't been fixed getting him fixed will not make any difference he will still wonder. Male cats tend to do that. If you don't want a male cat wondering you have to get him fixed while he is still a kitten.

That's how males are! I had one that did this and before I could have him neutered, someone stole him! He was a great cat too!
Get him fixed and he'll stay home, he won't play much but that's his choice right?

If he is not neutered, do that first thing. It will keep him home more and probably make him more cuddly. Also it will help prevent unwanted kittens. It is possible that he is jealous of your kitten and is finding other things than you to occupy his time.
