i bought a new pup.. it's been less than 24 hours since i've had him.. and this is my first time. my problem is that he sleeps a lot. i dont think he is that type... from what i saw at his birth place he was playful. but he sleeps here. he is happy and a very good dog. i just want to know that does a 9 week old pup sleep a lot and if not what can i do to take care of him?

Hi Rose,

Yes, it is very normal for a young puppy (or most other young) to sleep a lot. When you saw him a his 'birthplace' he was probable very active and excited because you were there. Let him sleep and don't worry...in a few weeks he'll run you ragged :o

I am a Breeder and I have purchased pups too. I have found that puppies that I have bought sometimes have a lot of bacteria that can be deadly. They get this from sharing water bowls or food dishes or sharing nipples. Call your Vet. s/he will want a fecal sample that's not older than 6 or 8 hours. They will check for any anomaly in the sample and determine if your pup has any gastrointestinal ailments. A blood test may be useful too which will check your pups liver and other organs. I did this without the blood test on a new pup I bought and found she had 3 deadly bacteria. The breeder told me she was fine but she was lethargic for the first 3 or 4 days so I became suspicious. I'm glad I took her to the Vet.

Yes puppies and even adult dogs do sleep a lot. He may have seemed a lot more playful where you got him from because he may have had his siblings there to play with. Just give him a lot of love and attention and you can also start training him with something like sit to help keep his mind active. Make sure he has a healthy diet and has all of his shots to prevent any illness etc! Good Luck!

Just like other babies they sleep a lot, pretty soon you'll be asking doesn't this puppy slow down or stop to sleep. Cherish the quiet time, it doesn't last long. If you have true concerns, by all means consult your vet, just in case it is something else.

puppy's do sleep a lot, like any other baby, I would advise you to take him to the vet asap and have him checked. It's always a good idea in case he's sick and to make sure he gets all his shots.

Just think of your new puppy like a baby. Baby's take several naps during the day and your puppy will too.
