Because the powers that be are afraid that if they pull out, the civil war now going on between the Sunnis and the Shiites will spread to involve Saudi Arabia and Iran, which would effectively cut off oil shipments of about...I'm guessing here...60 % ? of the world's oil supply. It would be economic disaster, worldwide. Everybody knows it. Its apparent that as mean as Saddam was, he had to be to keep his country from fracturing just like it is now, so Iraq was actually a cornerstone of peace in the Mideast. Now it is gone. The war has started a very serious problem for the world.

The best way to think of it is using the disengagement of Gaza as analogy. Facing pressures from within and without Ariel Sharon decided to withdraw all Jews from Gaza. At the time I agreed with this choice and supported it, but now we can all see the terrible flaw in the plan. It is all too easy to leave, but what ar eyou leaving behind? Is it ok to wipe your hands clean and say "not my problem"? It was wrong to leave Gaza to the local anarchy and now everyone in the region is paying the price; the arabs are fighting one another and every time there is a 'ceasefire' they throw rockets at Israel.
So by all means the soldiers should ger out of there, but try to create a modicum of stability before packing up. Anarchy and mayhem are in no one's interest.

As a member of the Armed Services I can tell you what we are told day after day. We are still there fighting to bring democracy to Iraq. We have to build the infrastructure for Iraq to stand on it's own. Most of the citizens are on our side they are afraid of the foreign fighters that are posing the biggest problem to that country

We are brain washed. We don't need to be in Iraq, it's a lost cause. Anyone can go over to Iraq and visit the Iraqi people, they are very friendly. (yea right, they hate Americans occupying their country).

One war's over. Counterinsurgency operations are ongoing, and the short side of the typical counterinsurgency time frame is ten years. It seems a lot of Americans have difficulty seeing what kind of fight we're in. You might find it elucidating to research "fourth generation warfare."

becuase bush says we should be scared of them becuase they are "terrorists" funny thing... we are the terrorists in their eyes... but no one seems to care about that. then bush says we'd lose oil. would we lose oil? i dunno but i do know most of what bush has said is a lie so why trust him now. fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. funny how that saying is beggining to make alot more sense to me. they have a civil war... woopdee ****** doo. why should i care? let em fight it out... let them get rid of hundreds of years of conflict in a gigantic war that will engulf the middle east.. they wont have time to think about hurting america cause they will have to worry about their own asses in their own country. in the end they will all get tired of fighting and finaly realize (ON THEIR OWN - and i stress that, its the only way people learn lessons) that they cant live in constant oppression and hatred.
