The Star of David is believed to be the symbol inscribed on his shield. This symbol in later years, although any form of idolatry is frowned upon, became a talisman to ward off evil. The reason for Hanukkah is a celebration of the miracle of the lamp oil. When the Maccabees entered the 'Temple',after overcoming the Persians, they discovered the oil for fueling the 'Temple'lamps had been desecrated, fouled. They soon found some unfould oil,but only enough to burn for one day.The miracle was that the lamp provided illumination for eight days. One candle a day is added in sequence to commemorate this event.
